HTTP Referrer Spam

Recently when I checked my referer logs to see who'd been linking to me (yes I'm vain), I started seeing referer URLs from travel web sites. I visited some of them, and they don't link to me, and clearly aren't the type of sites that link to a blog. So I guess it must be spam. I did a little research and found this article. Ooooo I hate those spammers so much!

I had to check the definition of vain because you're not the first person I've seen that's mentioned feeling vain for looking at referrer logs:

vain [adj] characteristic of false pride; having an exaggerated sense of self-importance; "a conceited fool"; "an attitude of self-conceited arrogance"; "an egotistical disregard of others"; "so swollen by victory that he was unfit for normal duty"; "growing ever more swollen-headed and arbitrary"; "vain about her clothes"

I don't see how that fits.

Possibly anyone who has a blog could be considered vain but I don't think that's true either. Most blogs are like unobtrusive digital personas and readers are your digital friends, acquaintances or eavesdroppers. But it really comes down to content. If you're preachy or pedantic and you think someone else cares, then you're vain, otherwise you're not.

Exaggerated sense of self importance? Sounds like me to me!
