Tags, I just don't get it

Ok, I've been reading a lot lately about de.lico.us and Flickr tagging and today an announcement from Technorati that they will combine the two with their own search. Great... except I just don't get it, how does adding tags and seeing a list of other stuff given the same tag by random individuals useful? And whats going to happen once the spammers start flooding the services? I wish I could see what others are seeing here, because it appears lots of people think tagging is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

It's another way to find similar information. I can see who else has a given page tagged and then I can explore what else they have tagged. There is a high chance that I will be interested in that too. Its like word-of-mouth. There are also some buzzwords that apply or have they not been invented yet. Maybe its the social software effect.

And this is a nice way to get a big picture view of a persons bookmarks http://kevan.org/extispicious

You are what you bookmark!

As an aside it is interesting to see the different tags people use to describe the same page. It's almost like using different human languages to say the same thing yet the meaning is not lost as it is "encoded" via the URL being tagged.
