The day the Tivo died
My Tivo Series 1 machine died last week. I think it got fried in a lightening storm. There was a small power spike and dip. Everything else was fine except......Tivo.
I'm sorry, this is hard.
Tivo wasn't just a machine. It's a family member. It's brings us things we love. Like American Idol, The Daily Show, Conan O'brien, Dora the Explorer and the... oh my god it's just hitting me..... The Simpsons
And now it's fried. My poor daughter had to discover the lifeless remains. Poor kid. It was a real old Yeller moment. Except completely different.
Anyway, it inspired this song. Goodbye Tivo Series 1. We miss you!
Missing Ads in Fast Time
(sung to the tune of American Pie)
A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that TV used to make me smile.
And I knew if Tivo had a chance
My viewing time it would enhance
And, maybe, we'd zone out for just a while.
But July's storm made me shiver
Overflowing power river
Bad news on the main screen
Black instead of red, blue and green
I can't remember if I cried
Ok, I cried and cried and cried,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the Tivo died.
So bye-bye, missing ads in fast time
Drive a hemi, buy a Chevy,
Your credit need not be high
And them good old boys were sittin' starin' wide-eyed
Singin', this'll be the stuff that I buy
This'll be the stuff that I buy
Did you record "Flava of Love?"
And Janet's nip we saw most of.
Pop it back again, slow mo
Vinatieri nailed the goal!
They say a machine has no soul
But how can that be when I love you so?
Well I've watched Conan at 9am
Ever since I worked at IBM.
Fast forward through the crappy guests,
Pimpbot 5000 was the best
I was a lonely TV-ad viewing schmuck
'Till TiVo came and made my life not suck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day my Tivo fried.
I started singin'
Bye-bye, missing ads in fast time
Drive a hemi, buy a Chevy,
Your credit need not be high
And them good old boys were sittin' starin' wide-eyed
Singin', this'll be the stuff that I buy
This'll be the stuff that I buy
And the three men I admire most:
Stuart, Homer and Farley's Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the Tivo died
And they were singin'
Bye-bye, missing ads in fast time
Drive a hemi, buy a Chevy,
Your credit need not be high
And them good old boys were sittin' starin' wide-eyed
Singin', this'll be the stuff that I buy
This'll be the stuff that I buy

Tivo was one of the things I missed when I was in Australia last year. I tried windows MCE, MythTV, and a few others but the guides were not available easily and nothing "just worked". It is a sad day indeed and it is easy to forget just how bad the commercials really are.

I feel your pain! We recently switched to Verizon's FiOS service and quickly found out that Tivo, for whatever reason, does not recognize FiOS as a cable service provider in our area. So, we have been using the Verizon DVR. Now, on the surface it sounds pretty nice: it records HD, has dual-tuners, allows us to stream any recorded contant from one DVR to another, etc. BUT, the UI sucks! The guide is slow to refresh when scrolling. It has an awful scheduling engine. I can't transfer recordings off the DVR and into my PC. Oh, the list goes on and on! I really really really miss my Tivo! :-(

It is an amusing statement on how we watch television when my 5 year old daughter cannot understand our inability to deliver the Backyardagans on command when we are vacationing abroad.
I recently was sent a newsletter from TiVO with a very tempting offer. Trade in your old one for a Series 2 AND keep your lifetime subscription for the low low price of $299.
