Katz Housing Changes
Yesterday was indeed an April Fools joke. No plans to switch, Erlang rules, Java drools, etc etc.
I guess as penance to the April Fools haters, my wife and I just found out in two months we have to move out of our rental house, the owner's are moving back in. Dammit.
So what this does is accelerates our plans, which was to move to the Raleigh NC area or Silicon Valley or some other tech friendly place after the summer. We are in Charlotte NC, mostly for family reasons. We were waiting until the kids were a little older before moving, we have a 7 month old and Laura's mom is a huge help with the kids.
Man I hate moving.
Anyway, suggestions and input about moving welcome.

Sorry to hear about your housing dilemma. A little over a year ago, my wife and I decided to sell everything and move, with our 2 year old, to China. After a few months of traveling we ended up in Hong Kong and it's been great. Anyway, my point is, if you have to move, keep your options wide open.

I'd like to make an enthusiastic plug for avoiding S.V. like the plague. Tech friendly? Sure. It's pretty much tech central -- but the quality of life is deplorable. Housing is *insanely* expensive - no, I mean *really* expensive. Unless you are a google-zillionaire, you will be s%!t in S.V. I was born and raised in S.V. and I've never lived in Raleigh, but it's guaranteed to be better than S.V. Good luck to you.

Austin is a really hot place right now. And it is highly rated for places to live in America.

Boulder is tech-friendly.
Want my house? 10 minutes from Boulder. I want to move back into my Denver rental home... :)

My wife and I love the Raleigh area (we're currently living in the Research Triangle). If you're ever nearby, drop me a line and I'll buy you lunch.

Portland Oregon is about the most bike-friendly city there is. Lotsa big green trees, open source developers, and a vital local music scene. And you can't beat the beer or the nearby mountains and the coast.

Avoid Minneapolis/St Paul too. We haven't seen 55 degrees since early November and there is still snow on the ground. Come to think of it, maybe I should move too.

I'll make a plug for the Raleigh/RTP area. Lived here for 10 years and really like it. I spent 14 years in the Bay Area in CA (grew up there) and, although I miss it, Raleigh is still pretty nice.
If you do move up here, I'd buy you lunch, too. Would be nice to have more Erlang-enthusiasts in the area :)

We are in the process of moving our ~15 person tech company from Tucson AZ to Portland OR. I've been living here in Portland for 4 months now. The tech scene here is unlike anything I've ever seen. I highly recommend checking it out.

First of all, stop using "I hate moving" even if you think you do.
Look at the move as an opportunity to change something about your life.
Think something like "What is the good part in this move". The answer might be that it is a new adventure, an opportunity for new discoveries, new friends. There is always a bright side of things.
On a more practical note. Use this as an opportunity to ruthlessly simplify your life.
Read Christine Kane's "9 Seemingly Logical Excuses for Clinging to Clutter" blog post together with your wife. ;)

You can live anywhere in the world. New Zealand is nice. We have about 6 US folk where I work, all incredibly bright and happy to be in a clean green country with beaches and bush at their doorstep.

I'll make a plug for Carrboro,NC. It's reasonably close to RTP (right next to Chapel Hill), and the quality of life is excellent.
